EMDR therapy - Eye Movement Desentsitization Reprocessing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help people heal from trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and other distressing life experiences. Rather than focusing only on talking about the past, EMDR helps your brain process memories that may still feel emotionally overwhelming or “stuck.”
When we experience trauma or highly distressing events, our brains don’t always process those experiences in the same way as ordinary memories. As a result, reminders of the event can trigger intense emotions, physical sensations, negative beliefs, or feelings that seem much stronger than the present situation calls for.
EMDR helps your brain reprocess those memories so they become part of your story rather than continuing to feel like they are happening in the present. The goal isn’t to erase the memory or forget what happened. Instead, it’s to reduce the emotional intensity so the memory no longer has the same power over your daily life.
What Happens During an EMDR Session?
EMDR follows a structured, collaborative process. Before beginning trauma processing, we’ll spend time building coping skills, strengthening emotional regulation, and ensuring you feel safe and prepared.
During reprocessing, I’ll ask you to briefly focus on a specific memory, image, thought, emotion, or body sensation while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided side-to-side eye movements or other forms of alternating stimulation. Throughout the session, you’ll simply notice what comes up while I guide you through the process.
Many clients describe EMDR as allowing their brain to do what it was naturally designed to do: process difficult experiences in a way that promotes healing.
Is EMDR Right for You?
EMDR therapy has been extensively researched and is recognized as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD. It may also be helpful for anxiety, panic, grief, childhood trauma, difficult life experiences, and other concerns where past experiences continue to affect the present.
Every person’s healing journey is unique. If you’re wondering whether EMDR is the right fit for you, I’d be happy to answer your questions and help determine the approach that best meets your needs.
Healing doesn’t mean forgetting your past. It means your past no longer defines your present.
